چکیده

Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the chemisorption of H, N, and P atoms on a graphene substrate with or without Stone–Thrower–Wales (STW) defects. Energetically, all three atoms are preferred to adsorb onto the defect sites by an energy difference of 0.683–2.143 eV. In both the intrinsic and defected graphene, H atom adsorbs on top of a C atom, while N and P atoms adsorb at the bridge site between two C atoms with the N atom breaking the underneath C–C bond in the STW defect. Changes of atomic, electronic and magnetic structures associated with the atomic chemisorption on STW defects in graphene are discussed. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Hydrogen Peroxide Adsorption on Graphene with Stone-Wales Defect

To explore the possibility of using graphene based biosensor, adsorption of hydrogen peroxide on graphene has been investigated using density functional theory. The electronic properties of defect free and defective graphene in the presence of different number of hydrogen peroxide have been studied. The graphene with the most stable configuration defect named as SW defect is considered. The hig...

Study of Stone-wales Defect on Elastic Properties of Single-layer Graphene Sheets by an Atomistic based Finite Element Model

In this paper, an atomistic based finite element model is developed to investigate the influence of topological defects on mechanical properties of graphene. The general in-plane stiffness matrix of the hexagonal network structure of graphene is found. Effective elastic modulus of a carbon ring is determined from the equivalence of molecular potential energy related to stretch and angular defor...

Effect of Defects on Mechanical Properties of Graphene under Shear Loading Using Molecular Dynamic Simulation

Graphene sheet including single vacancy, double vacancy and Stone-Wales with armchair and zigzag structure was simulated using molecular dynamics simulation. The effect of defects on shear’s modulus, shear strength and fracture  strain was investigated. Results showed that these shear properties reduce when the degrees of all kinds of defects increase. The dangling bond in SV and DV defected gr...

A study on the tailoring of interfacial shear strength between graphene and polymer by addressing defects in graphene

A molecular dynamics simulation study on the interfacial strengthening between defected graphene and polypropylene matrix is implemented. As intrinsic defects in single layer graphene, oxidation, Thrower-Stone-Wales(TSW) defect, and Adatom defect are considered. On the transversely isotropic nanocomposites unit cell embedding different defected graphene, transversely isotropic stress-strain rel...

Creation of graphene allotropes using patterned defects

Monolithic structures can be built into graphene by the addition and subsequent re-arrangement of carbon atoms. To this end, ad-dimers of carbon are a particularly attractive building block because a number of emerging technologies offer the promise of precisely placing them on carbon surfaces. In concert with the more common Stone-Thrower-Wales defect, repeating patterns can be introduced to c...
